The municipality of Delft has a first with the climate-proof tram shelter, in front of Delft Central Station. The tram shelter has been built in agreement with the regional transport authority and HTM. The roof of the shelter collects rainwater and leads it through double-walled glass plates into planters. This way the shelter not only gives shelter to people standing in the rain, but also gives entertainment to waiting people and help water the plants.
The stop symbolizes the need for a different way of furnishing public spaces. With this special tram shelter, the Hoogheemraadschap van Delfland wants to bring ideas like this to the attention of political parties, which are now discussing the plans of municipalities for the coming years.
It is an example of how useful rainwater can be in the public space, but also to give rainwater a visible function. In the near future, we will see more of this type of solutions if you ask Hoogheemraadschap van Delfland. According to them the public space will change drastically the coming decades. Fabrique Public & Industrial design would love to help them with that!
